Added Protection from Heat

Radiant Barrier is a secondary insulation meant to compliment, but not replace, your primary attic-floor insulation. It is not a substitute for attic insulation but rather something that works alongside a solid R-38 of Cellulose, Rockwool, or Fiberglass. It’s also the best choice for insulating most garages.

We install a Radiant Barrier material, which is often described as looking like a fabric sheet of aluminum foil, directly under the roofing, attached to the bottom of the roof rafters. This will reflect and refract upwards of 90% of radiant heat, reducing the temperature inside the attic which in turn helps the insulation work better and keeps your A/C ducting cooler.

It’s important to note that Radiant Barrier should ideally be installed prior to insulation when the attic is empty. This is because it requires extensive movement around the attic which can be challenging to do when insulation is present. In some instances, we can install Radiant Barrier when insulation is present, and take these jobs on a case by case basis.

A Radiant Barrier is a secondary insulation designed to complement, not replace, your primary attic-floor insulation. It works alongside a solid R-38 of Cellulose, Rockwool, or Fiberglass to improve energy efficiency, and it’s also a great choice for insulating most garages.

We install the radiant barrier material — often described as looking like a fabric-like sheet of aluminum foil — directly under the roofing, attached to the bottom of the roof rafters. This reflects and refracts up to 70% of radiant heat, lowering the attic temperature. A cooler attic helps your insulation perform better and keeps A/C ducting cooler, improving overall home comfort and energy efficiency.

Radiant barriers are ideally installed before insulation, when the attic is empty, because the process requires moving around the space extensively. In some cases, we can install a radiant barrier over existing insulation, but these projects are handled on a case-by-case basis.

REMOVALS

Generally, it’s not necessary to remove or vacuum existing attic insulation. We can usually use your current insulation as a base and simply install additional material over it to bring the attic up to an R-38 performance level.

Today, we’re seeing a trend where many insulation companies suggest that the only way to “do the job right” is to remove the old attic insulation. This is often a way to make extra profit at your expense. Unless you have fire damage, water damage, or severe rodent infestation, there is  no benefit or reason to remove the old insulation.

That being said, we also regularly conduct removals for homeowners who simply want everything cleared for ease of mind — and that’s okay too. Our company prioritizes transparency, so you can make an informed decision for your home without paying for unnecessary services.

Cleaning Your Attic Soon?

The ideal time to install Radiant Barrier insulation is immediately after a clean-out, when the attic is fully accessible. After insulation or storage is put back in place, installation becomes much more difficult, and many contractors will not perform this type of work.
